Registrar Lookup (datapulse_dns_registrar)

Resolve IANA registrar IDs to human-readable names, or search for registrars by name.

Overview

The datapulse_dns_registrar tool operates in two modes:

  1. ID lookup (set iana_id): Returns the registrar matching that IANA ID.
  2. Name search (set search): Case-insensitive substring search on registrar name.

At least one of iana_id or search must be provided. If both are given, iana_id takes precedence.

Parameters

ParameterTypeRequiredDefaultDescription
iana_idintegerNo—Exact lookup by IANA registrar ID (an integer >= 1). An RDAP ianaid of 0 means the registry assigns no IANA registrar IDs (Nominet .uk among others); there is no record to look up and the tool says so
searchstringNo—Substring search on registrar name (case-insensitive, minimum 3 characters)
limitintegerNo25Max results for search mode (max 100)

Example Usage

ID Lookup: Resolve a registrar ID

{
  "iana_id": 146
}

Response:

[{"iana_id": 146, "name": "GoDaddy.com, LLC", "status": "Accredited", "domain_count": 61247803}]

An ID with no registrar is an empty list [] with a hint as a second content item (“No registrar has IANA ID 99999 in the IANA registrar list.”), not an error.

Name Search: Find registrars by name

{
  "search": "godaddy"
}

Response:

[
  {"iana_id": 146, "name": "GoDaddy.com, LLC", "status": "Accredited", "domain_count": 61247803},
  {"iana_id": 886, "name": "GoDaddy.com, Inc.", "status": "Accredited", "domain_count": 0},
  {"iana_id": 2155, "name": "GoDaddy Online Services Cayman Islands Ltd.", "status": "Terminated", "domain_count": 0}
]

A search with no matches returns [] with the hint “No registrars found matching the search term.” as a second content item.

Search with limit

{
  "search": "network",
  "limit": 5
}

Response Format

Returns a JSON array of registrar objects:

FieldDescription
iana_idIANA-assigned registrar ID (stable identifier)
nameHuman-readable registrar name
statusRegistrar accreditation status (e.g., “Accredited”, “Terminated”)
domain_countThe registrar’s portfolio size from ICANN’s Metrica reporting; 0 when no scored snapshot exists. Present in both modes. A shared registrar is a meaningful signal on a small registrar and none on a mega or brand-protection registrar

Workflow Patterns

Resolve IDs from regclusters results

regclusters(date="2025-02-09", min_cluster_size=50)
→ See registrar_id: 146, registrar_id_scheme: "iana", registrar_name: "GoDaddy.com, LLC"
→ registrar(iana_id=146) # status and portfolio size; only for scheme "iana"
→ A row with registrar_id_scheme "registry" (Norid's 930834408 for .no, say) is the
  registry's own number and cannot be resolved here

Resolve IDs from techsim results

dptechsim(domain="suspicious.com", similarity=0.95)
→ Results include registrar_iana_id: 3222
→ registrar(iana_id=3222)
→ Get registrar name for reporting

Find registrar ID by name

registrar(search="namecheap")
→ Note the iana_id values
→ regclusters(date="2025-02-09", registrar_id=1068)
→ See all domains registered at Namecheap on that date

Data Source

This tool queries the IANA registrar registry, updated daily from the official IANA assignments. The database contains ~4,100+ registrars including both active (accredited) and historical (terminated) entries.
